Alo… though I haven’t been active at all at this pool, nor in the rest of the discussions at the google group, I would like to share an idea that came up to me while reading the posts here.
In social science “empowerment” had been a concept that leads the discussions and proposals of approach to social theories of development and democratic participation. From a rights perspective, NGOs are shifting its way to relate to people saying that any intent of change should be directed not just to “solve an existent inequality”. The approach is substantively different because it departs from a principle that WE are not solving the problem of OTHER, by imposing our beliefs of truth of correctness, even if our intentions are good, even if our knowledge is up to date in the debates sustainability and renewable energies… it means that our incidence first, departs from below, is VERY grass-rooted, comes from the people experiencing those inequalities, our knowledge is first sensitive rather than unilateral, and projects developed in this context are not final but a seed to lead further long lasting changes, thus empowering.
Departing from the principle that peoples are right-holders, they direct their lives, inequalities are violations to that right. Thinking of the foundation you are willing to create, perhaps you try to address the unequal distribution of resources that end up depriving peoples to live dignified lives, thus dis-empowering.
I find a VERY very exciting to bring together this debate on POWER and your project on ENERGIES. At the bottom of this relies, I think, the same approach: sustainable energies and long lasting social empowerment. Peoples having control of energetic resources that affect their lives would become through this processes stronger social agents.
I don’t want to be much longer., but I think the name of the foundation is crucial. Ive seen 2 kinds of name on the pool, formal ones and easy-catchy ones. A simple name could be more related to people, easy to get, easy to feel in touch with it. But a more formal one could be a tool for funding for international organizations.
“Energy & Sustainability for all” i like because it may balance both lines of thought. Though I dare to make 3 suggestions:
1. Use “Energies”, instead of “Energy”, to consider diversity, pluralism. (vgr. Feminisms vs. Feminism)
2. Sustainability is quite long for an easy-to-catch name, rather use a shorter variation of it “Sustainable”
3. If you agree with the concept (which I think you may because of names like “Energy for all”, “Peoples energy”, “Our energy”) make use of the idea of “Powers to empower”, maybe for the branding.
So a final suggestion would be to play around something like: “Sustainable energies for empowerment” or
“Sustainable energies for social change”… Powers to empower…
I went much longer than I thought…
Cheers,
Lulú
